I had the same experience and was escorted by company security. Many of my friends had the same experience. They don't need to give you notice or smile at you before you're fired in many non-governmental companies in the US. You can get three months-twelve months severance package.

The CEO and other employees are often let go when a company changes hands or makes less profit.

As you mentioned, losing a job is a bad situation for the employees and families--terrible!
