Worse for me was when some of the people he had known since he was a child didn’t invite us to their weddings, baptisms, or other parties because they took issue with my color. I felt I was robbing him of time with his childhood friends — the only people he knew.

Remarkable story! I am so happy that you found your tribe. We all want to be happy and accepted.
It is a human nature that we discriminate against one another. Yes, people tend to keep to their comfort zone when it comes to race, class, education, beliefs , and others. OK!
However, I work hard to offer empathy and compassion to all human beings, especially when I’m interacting with people who are different from me in anyway. Empathy works for everyone!
Thank you for teaching us a lesson!
