The month of May is mental health awareness month. The poor mental health issue is common, affecting you or a least one person you know. Be aware.

What is mental health? What is mental illness?

CDC defines,

Mental health as “an important part of overall health and well-being. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.”

Mental illnesses as “conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, or behavior, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia. Such conditions may be occasional or long-lasting (chronic) and affect someone’s ability to relate to others and function each day.”

Poor mental health or mental illness do not discriminate. Anyone can struggle with it — from people living in the palace to people without a home. According to CDC, about one in every five Americans experience a mental illness in their life.

Furthermore, CDC explains our poor mental health increases the risk of physical conditions like heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Suicide is the second cause of death among people ages 15–34 and severe mental illness cost 193.2 billion dollars in lost earning in the US.
