“I Don’t See Color.”

I see colors, social class, and gender. And I can notice hidden disabilities too. What about you?
Recently, a Nigerian Christian woman said, “I don’t see color. We all are human race.” Hallelujah, Amen.
True, she doesn’t see color becasue she runs her own business, and her children are still young and live in an area everyone knows who they are and what they can offer others.
The brilliant Nigerian entrepreneur reminded me of a former good friend, Hali. She was the first person who helped me when I moved to the US. She always said, “ Bassey, I don’t see color.”
Then I met Hali’s mom in the theater for the first time.
Hali’s mother refused to look at me. My friend took a step forward and reminded her, “ Mom, this is Bassey I have been telling you about.” The older woman couldn’t hide her distaste for seeing that my color differed from hers. Hail’s husband, who sat next to his MIL, pretended he had never met me. Their behavior was bizarre for me to notice it. My brain works differently and often; she chooses not to notice…
