When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching–they are your family.” — Jim Butcher.

My name is Ifiok. Here’s my story.

I am thirty-nine and live and run my business in North London. As a child, my parents were ashamed of me, and I was treated awfully by them, some of their friends, and many of my classmates.

I have a hidden disability, and many people don’t know, including my business partners and most of my employees.

Did my dad have two children with another woman?

When and how did my mum know about my dad’s infidelity? Why did she put up with him for so long?

A fresh start:

I am embracing and enjoying my fabulous new life. As an unwanted and disabled child, I sometimes wonder how human beings can be unwanted and unloved by their parents. I am not whining or complaining but reflecting on my life then and today.

I cannot believe that my mum lives with me now and tries to answer my questions individually.

And I am living a remarkable life every day. I am so grateful for life.

“Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” — David Ogden Stiers.

My family then and now:

I am one of the seven children of my parents. We are four women and three men.

Three of us went to a public university, and four went to a private one. Three of us fought with our parents to choose our careers on our own terms, and we are happy with our lives today. The three sisters did their own things from the day they left for college.
