Are you a good or bad person? Are you right or wrong?

What makes a person or something good or bad? How do you define right or wrong?

Philosophers suggest that we apply critical thinking when using absolute words such as good, bad, right, or wrong to describe things, people, or ideas.

War is bad. Killing people is wrong. What about people who believe that killing doctors for a fetus is good?

Are you right or wrong? Which one will make you happy?

I did a google search for what was terrible a few decades ago; here are some:

  1. I’ll be going to vote with my daughter this Sunday. In the US, denying a woman the right to vote was right and good. Why? Women were wrong to vote because they could not think for themselves.
  2. It was right for people to watch an execution in a public square; spectators clapped and laughed while young children watched.
  3. It was a good business and the law of the land to sell humans as salesperson sells shoes in Nordstrom.
  4. It was terrible to be pregnant while teaching in the classroom. It was right to protect children from seeing pregnant women in New York schools.
  5. Add Yours.

I walked into my Philosophy 101 class and sat in an empty seat in the front roll. I buried my face in reading Newswatch Magazine. On my left and right were other students doing their business.

Next, an older student with a classic blue suit walked in and asked me to stand up because the seat belonged to him. I was baffled and stared at him.

Who is right? Who is wrong? Who is the bad or good person?

Mr. Student explained why the seat belonged to him; after all, he was older. So, he was right for me to stand up for him because he was older — his culture. But, for me, the older student was wrong because, as a woman, I couldn’t leave a seat for a healthy man — my culture. Worse, he was wrong because the seat…
